Cabozantinib is used to treat certain types of renal cell carcinoma (RCC; a type of kidney cancer), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC; a type of liver cancer), thyroid cancer, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (a type of tumor that begins in certain cells in the pancreas), and other neuroendocrine tumors.
Cabozantinib capsule is used to treat medullary thyroid cancer that has already spread to different parts of the body. Cabozantinib tablet is used alone to treat advanced kidney cancer. It is also used in combination with nivolumab as first-line treatment for advanced kidney cancer.Cabozantinib is a small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) that blocks the activity of multiple receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) involved in tumor growth, angiogenesis, metastasis, and drug resistance. Key targets include the MET, VEGF receptors, and AXL RTKs, which are crucial for cancer cell survival, proliferation, and spread. By inhibiting these pathways, cabozantinib slows or stops cancer growth, prevents tumor blood vessel formation (angiogenesis), and reduces the ability of cancer cells to invade and spread to other parts of the body.
